Creative Writing – 1 spot left

Teacher: Elizabeth Spencer
Day: Tuesday
Fee: $120 or 3 payments of $45

Description: Marvel at the majesty and musicality of words while learning creative writing techniques, and discover how to incorporate them in your own works of fiction and nonfiction. This class will focus on techniques that bring writing to life.  Through a combination of discussion and individual and collaborative activities designed to make you “play” with your words, we will cover topics such as making concrete word choices, developing vivid imagery, utilizing sound devices, varying sentence structure, and developing an authentic voice. The aim of this class is to enhance your writing skills, no matter the starting level, and to develop a greater appreciation for written language within a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Quality, rather than quantity, is the goal! Written products will include descriptive sentences and paragraphs, a narrative essay, and a short story.
Homework will vary. Some weeks will require preparation for the class and may include bringing in a writing sample in order to work on revision techniques and/or for collaborative purposes. Other weeks may require a small amount of reading in advance in order to participate in group discussions. Expect approximately one hour or less each week. (While all final copies submitted will receive qualitative feedback, parents may also request a quantitative grade for each paper.)

Deutsch:  Sprache und Kultur

Teacher: Andrea Kinnear
Day: Thursday
Fee: $100 or 3 payments of $40

Description: Machen Sie SpaB (have fun) in this mostly immersive journey through German Sprache (language), Kultur, and Geographie.  Each week students will acquire new conversational skills to take home and practice. We’ll tackle the basics of greetings, colors, numbers (and math!), weather, interests, and family.  Students will begin using the language once they enter the classroom. Additionally, we’ll learn about such German artists as Duher and Ernst, authors to include Goethe and Grimm, and the ‘Big Three’ German composers.  Students will be expected to practice daily at home. While grades will not be issued for this class, students should expect 1.5 hours a week of memory work. Students who cannot commit to memory work should not enroll in this class. There will be food! Germans love their Schwein (pork) and Kartoffeln (potatoes) and, of course, Pretzeln! Parents of students with dietary requirements will occasionally need to bring alternative food items to class (deduct $10 from course fee).
