Discover Italian

This is a year-long course.

Description: You will learn the basics and develop communication skills in a new language. The class will develop the ability to sustain a conversation in the present tense, including fundamental words, verbs and sentences needed to communicate.
Speaking and listening, reading and writing, learning the basic rules of grammar will all be included.
Every lesson lasts 60 min.
There will be 15-min./20 min. homework for each lesson.
There will be a written test every 2 months, to check progress.
The opportunity to study Italian essays of the culture, history and geography are part of the class.
Traditional Italian food samples are optional and tasty!!

Earth Science – FULL

Description: Earthquakes, lighting, and erosion, oh my! Using a variety of resources, we’ll be exploring the basics of planet earth, weather, and rocks and minerals. The majority of our focus will be hands on experiments and demonstrations, while keeping up a science journal. There will be small amounts of homework expected, less than one hour per week. Please email me with any concerns or if your student has any allergies.

Extraordinary Inventions

Description: In our Inventions class, students will learn about revolutionary inventions that changed the course of human history. From the invention of the wheel to movies and computers, we will study the civilizations that produced them, the inventors themselves, and the historical affects of each invention on human society. We will do experiments and projects in class based around each invention. At the end of the semester, each student will create their own invention at home and bring it to class for discussion and appreciation!

Figurative Language

Description: A little bird told me that you like to write. Well, the cat is out of the bag. In this class we will learn all about figurative language.  Each week we will focus on an expression in speech and then write our own pieces that correlate with that particular figurative language. This class will be as cool as a cucumber. So bring your pencil, your notebook and your creative minds as we explore similes, metaphors, alliterations, personification, hyperboles, and several others.

Lands of Literature: Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH

Teacher: Patricia Richman

Description: Welcome to Lands of Literature – Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH! On this adventure, we will solve numerous problems – how to design and build an owl home, how to design and build a rat maze, how to move a house using only simple tools, how to find our way through a cave, design and make electrical circuits, and finally design and build our own inventions!  All this while reading Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O’Brien. We’ll also learn about genre, setting, homonyms, acronyms, irregular plurals, how to compare and contrast, summary, plot flow charts, and give a short speech. Most of all, we will have FUN exploring the varied lands of literature.  We hope you’ll join us!
Students should expect 30 min of homework each week, in addition to reading two or three chapters of our book.  They will also outline and write an additional chapter for our story.
Required text: Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O’Brien (Students may have this read aloud, or listen to an audio version, but they will still need a paper copy.)

Stop Motion Animation

Description: Learn basics of Photoshop, graphic design, roles of a set director, cameras and much more. Take home a published favorite Character movie on USB Stick. Lessons in SMA, and build a set using LEGO minifigures, Minecraft figures, any favorite characters. All equipment and LEGO provided. Take home USB with all your work and movies. This is a team building class two students work together.
