Description: Welcome to our homeschool Girl Scout troop! This multi-level GS troop includes girls from Daisy level up through Ambassadors (approximately grades K-11). The Girl Scout program emphasizes progressive leadership development through girl-led, hands-on, just plain old fun activities. So what does this mean for you and your daughter? The girls will have numerous opportunities to choose the activities they’d like to try, and we’re hoping parents will share their special areas of expertise as we earn badges in a variety of areas and take part in service projects to help our community. Join us as we learn more about ourselves and the world around us!
Associated costs: include $25 GSUSA registration and approximately $80 for vest or sash, book, Council patches and pins. Troop dues are $25/girl.

Acrylic Painting – FULL

Age: 12+
Teacher: Ken Wright

Fee: $145 or 3 payments of $50

Description: This class will be painting using acrylic paints. This will be a fun class studying still life and landscape painting, with attention to form and shadow techniques.

Students will need:

  • acrylic paints
  • brushes of various sizes for acrylic paint
  • paper or plastic palette for mixing paints
  • a palette knife
  • canvases or canvas boards, up to 16″” X 20″” in size

Beginner Group Guitar

Age: 9+
Teacher: Maria Fischer
Day: Tuesday
Fee: $140 or 3 payments of $50
Full year course

Description: Learn riffs, become more proficient with chords and scales, and rock out with a rhythm section! Electric & acoustic guitar players are welcome. Electric guitarists will need their own small amp and instrument cable for classes. Younger students are welcome based on their skill level and with approval.

Beginning Knitting

Age: 9+

Description: Let’s learn to knit! Learn how much fun you can have with needles and yarn! First we’ll learn to cast on, knit, and purl. We’ll learn to work the garter stitch, stockinette stitch, and how to knit ribbing and cast off your project! In addition to knitting basics, we’ll learn a little about how to read patterns and how to choose the right yarn and needles for projects. We’ll also learn to increase and decrease stitches, and how to use yarn needles to do finishing work on finished projects. We will make a pumpkin (perfect for the fall season), a doll hat, and a scarf, along with other fun projects. Experienced knitters welcome!

Chess

Drama 101: Concept and Discovery – FULL

Age: 10+

Full Year Course – with classes in January

Description: Have you ever watched a play on the stage and wonder, ” How do they do that!?” Well now is your chance to learn what it takes to put on a play. This semester you will learn not just the terminology or “stage talk”, you will learn how to put together a short skit, how to put on stage makeup, costumes and the importance of colors, how to put together a stage design, and have fun with tongue twisters, pantomime games, memory games and so much more. This is a two day class and is a prerequisite to the second semester class: Drama 101: Application and Adventure. The first rule in this class is to be sure to bring your imagination with you, for without it you’ll never know your true potential. Second rule is to always bring a pencil and paper because you never want to lose an idea. Other supplies will be provided.

Game School

Age: 8-12

Description: This class teaches interpersonal skills through a variety games! Does your learner get frustrated when they don’t win a game? Do they successfully advocate for themselves when challenged? Does he/she experience anxiety when required to participate in group activities? This may be the perfect class for your learner! We provide a brief lesson at the beginning of the class, then lace the concepts throughout games and fun, interactive activities. Psst… we have so much fun that they forget they are in class!

Music and Movement – FULL

Age: 4-8

Fee: $80 or 3 payments of $30

Description: Do you love music?  Do you love to dance?  This class is going to be full of energy as we learn songs and dance. Every song will be child friendly and approved.  Each week, we will play games and move to music. This is a great physical education class and helps to get all the wiggles out while dancing, singing and having fun.  The children are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and to bring a water bottle.

Rock Band/Intermediate Guitar

Age: 12+

Description: Our Rock Band classes place guitarists, bassists, keyboardists and vocalists into full-fledged bands that rehearse & play live gigs! Having taught hundreds of our students a large catalogue of classics over the past 10 years, Academy of Rock Music along with their instructors are the music performance leaders of Hampton Roads. Electric guitarists will need their own small amp and instrument cable for rehearsals. Keyboardists will need a small-sized keyboard for rehearsals. Younger students are welcome based on their skill level and with approval. ​

Story Acting: Fairy Tales – 1 Spot Left

Age: 6-10

Fee: $150 or 3 payments of $55

Description: Does your child still love to put on a costume and pretend to be their favorite character from their favorite story? Well here is a chance to do just that in this very basic introduction to Drama. Each week we will read a different story, then put on a costume and act the story out. Without the students realizing it, they will begin to learn some of the vocabulary used on stage, memorize some of the story and work on their concentration and listening skills. Towards the end of the semester they will choose which is their most favorite story and perform for their family and friends. Supplies will be provided.

​Supernatural Creatures and Folklore

Age: 12+

Description: From angels to demons, witches to vampires, and supernatural weaponry to mystical languages, let’s look into paranormal legends and lore such as those featured on the television show Supernatural.  Students will explore otherworldly beings that have haunted human imagination for centuries. Light homework may include reading articles and watching videos or television shows.

Watercolor Pencils

Age: 12+
Teacher: Ken Wright
Day: Thursday
Fee: $145 or 3 payments of $50

Description: This is an opportunity for students to develop their drawing skills in new and abstract ways, while working first hand with a professional artist. The focus of this class will be on teaching students to draw using watercolor pencils, then blending the colors using paint brushes and water. The finished piece will resemble a watercolor painting. So what is abstraction? To me, abstraction is a close-up view of realism, but how do you get there? What does it mean? Students will take a journey in drawing to become creative in the use of shape and form. Students will learn to understand and see “realism as it relates to the abstract form.” This is simply seeing from a different view.

Students will need:

  • a water color pencil set
  • Large Strathmore,Canson, or Bristol (any brand really) watercolor pads of around 20 sheets.  (Size should be about 14″x17″, but doesn’t have to be exact)
  • one roll of masking tape

Woodworking 101

Age: 10+
Teacher: Stephanie Waggoner
Day: Tuesday and Thursday
Fee: $250 or 3 payments of $90

Description: Interested in making something by hand out of wood?  This class will start from the basics, including safety and information on the wood itself.
By the end of the semester, we hope to have made several projects, all using hand tools. All materials will be provided, and all students need to bring to class is eye protection (even students who wear glasses need additional eye protection).  There will be no homework for this class.
